They either get you doing shadowboxing the entire workout, or they partner you up with someone and have you punch each other's gloves, which is very awkward and unsatisfying. Boxing gloves are not focus mitts, were never designed to be used as focus mitts, and certainly aren't very good targets for catching punches and kicks.
You could join a technical kickboxing program and get the satisfying feeling of hitting real targets, but those classes will focus on a lot of overwhelming and often tedious kickboxing details and techniques that you probably don't care about, and certainly aren't interested in listening to or learning if your goal is simply to have a fun and effective fat-burning workout.

Over the years I've personally participated in countless kickboxing classes offered by different gyms and independent trainers, and something I've noticed at every one of those workouts is that they always include boring defensive drills that have no place in a workout program designed for people interested in maximum fun and calorie burning.
Sure, if you're training to become a highly proficient kickboxer then it is imperative that you train an equal amount of offensive and defensive drills, but if your goal is simply to burn fat and have a fun kickboxing workout, then there's no need to even bother with boring defensive drills such as ducking and weaving. You'll have more fun and burn more calories if you just focus all of your energy towards offensive punching and kicking exercises.
